Question 1
 What issues are there regarding quality and early child development professionals talking about?

"There are not enough schools here for young children. many run the streets where there is much violence. there are public school being built but not ready and not for the young"

Question 2
What professional developments requirements are there?

There are many colleges here. Teachers still have to have a degree, but like the schools, there are not enough. Many foreigner teacher come to teach but leave because it is hard here. My friend is a teacher in a school like yours (Head Start) and she has a degree but in psychology with children"

Question 3
What are some of your professional goals?

"I want to finish my next degree. I want to be able to do better for my family."

When I think of Columbia, I think of beautiful people and place to visit. It has its tourist places and events, but like every country they have issues with the poor and not enough schools. It made me take a second look at the same issues here in my community.

consequences

I have found that I need to be more of an advocate in educating parents as to what we really do during the day. Many parents consider Early Head Start and Head Start to be a "Day Care"
 Another consequence I have come to realize is that I need to become more aware of the politics side of education. It seems as if as soon as Oboma comes on I turn the channel. I need to know what is going on so I can better prepare myself and my families.

Sharing Web Resources Week 6

This week I reviewed the Children's Defence Fund site. I decided to look into a "boring" for most people section. I looked through the Guide to the Federal Government Process link. I learned that spending falls into two categories Discretionary and Entitlement spending. Discretionary Spending must be approved by congress each year Entitlement spending does not need to be approved by congress. As you can see, there is only 2% spend on education. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture.

International Contacts-Part 2

Week5 Assign2 S Brieden

I have found that the people of Medellin are very proud, both the rich and to poor.  Many people in Medellin are poor. There is a very small area where there are wealthy people.  Juan informed me that he knew a family that left their home to go to the market and came back and her house was wiped away.

Here is a picture of the middle of the city I googled. I am working on having Jaun send me one that is more recent to me through Facebook.  When I get it, I will post it.

 Medellin, in August has a Feria de las Flores or Flower Festival. . Juan says that this is the one time that Medellin comes together.

 

 

Juan gave me a website where I learned the Medellin has of 30 Universities.  There are many programs in place to help educate the poor. Some of the programs are:

1.       Program: Nobody Is Out  Purpose

2.       Childhood Education

3.       Educative Benefits for Access and Permanence

4.       Public Service for Everyone and Respect for Diversity

There are also program to get more people able to go to college

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was an eye opener for everyone. There were 27 innoscent killed for reasons we may never know. Virginia Tech 2007, 32 were killed not by a stranger but a student and peer. Since the year 2000, there have been 64 school shootings with 147 killed. (List, 2013). This information is for the United States.  The question is "Should teachers be liscenced to carry hand guns on school grounds?" Australia and Great Britain have agreed to the  "National Firearms Agreement (NFA), which banned semi-automatic and pump action rifles and shotguns and required registration of all firearms, strict standards for gun licenses, and a permit for each gun purchase subject to a 28-day waiting period." (CDF.2013) Since this was put into affect Austroa in 16 years has had no mass shooting. (CDF, 2013). Since the Sandy Hook shooting my agency as decidied to keep all doors locked at all times. Parents are to knock to gain entry ad visitory are check in only at the office.

International Contacts

I am talking with JUAN GUILLERMO ACEVEDO. He is from  Medellín, Antioquia which is in Columbia.  When we discussed poverty he said that "there is so much poverty. Some people for their house it is just boards nailed together. Many only have a tarp as a roof. It is not lik in all the pictures of the pretty places. I wish it all looked like the pictures they use to make people want to come visit."

It makes me wonder about the poor here in the United States. Where I live there are poor and people living in poverty, but I have not seen homes in this bad of shape.

Establishing Professional Contacts and Expanding resources

For part one of this assignment I emailed about 25 different people and have not heard back from anyone. I did email several more on Friday, so I am hoping that come Monday maybe one will respond. I was however to get in contact with one person from Medellín, Antioquia. I have a coworker from Columbia and she put me in contact with him. Who would have thought this was going to be such a difficult task? As for part 2, I have chosen two. The Children's Defense Fund and the Comal County Child Advocacy Center. I chose both of these resources because I was an abused child and no one spoke up for me, so i am here to ive a voice to the children with no voices.

My Supports!

Support! I am a very self reliant person and do not expect support and rearly ask for it. That does not mean that I do not get it. Support is being there when needed even when it is not asked of. Support can be financial, confidence and emotional.  I get emotional support from my small group at church. We tend to be a support system for each other. I know that IF and WHEN I do need help they will be there.  I also get emotional and confidence support for my two closest friends. I am there for them also. It is not a matter of  "I am here for you" but an " I will be there in 5 minutes" kind of support. Financial support is well my job, that supports me and my children. Even though I am a self supporting system, having someone there to touch my shoulder and say "It will be OK" I will be needing much emotional support in the next coming days, weeks, months and year. A person who is second to my heart is going to Afghanistan for 6 months to a year. I am not happy, but wil SUPPORT what he feels he needs to do. Everyone needs support, no matter what kind it is. There is no one person who can be totally alone. I also recieved support form family and friends when I was finishing my degree. I was working full time, home schooling my 16 year old and going to school full time. I beame my biggest support telling myself " I can do it"

My connections to Play

After my parents ivorced my daddy built me aplayhouse similiar to this one. I lived in this every weekend. It killed me to have to tear it down a couple weeks ago because it was falling apart.

Barbies were my life growing up. to this day every Christmas I still get a barbie.

When I was a kid my grandfather used to ALWAYS tell us "Does that spell toy on it?" (Elmer V. Trull) That is how we knew we were not to touch it. Unfortunatelly that was said alot when I was around which meant I could not touch anything. Another quote my mom would say is " be home as soon as the light is on"  (linda L. Springer)

When I was little we had a duck pond that we played in all the time. The ducks were our pets.

WhenI was rowing up play seemed so free and safe. We ran the streets until the street lights came on. Now it is just not safe.

My friends are important to me especially these two. They are my rock and are there through the good and bad times.  God and my church are also the highest on my list of positive relationships

My other babies are my dogs Maddi and Mudd.

This is my family, the last picture that was taken before my grandmother passed away. As a family we have been through so much and I know that even when we fight we are all there for each other.

This quote makes me think of my teenager. As a parent and educator I can only do so much, the rest is left up to him.

Testing, Testing, Testing

I do not agree the way testing is done. In public school, the STAARis mandatory. They sit in a room for however many hours and are expected to take this test. BECAUSE of the NCLB act, teachers are teaching to the test, because it loos bad on them is the test scores are low. This is not testing the holistic child. Children learn is so many different ways and should be tested in those same ways. My daughter makes herself so sick right before the test. Many do. It is not fair to the child. Yes, i do think that we need to measure what they are learning, but even in my toddler classroom, I get questionsed why Mark does not know that he is a boy and is three.

Poverty

As a child in elementary school I was not aware that I lived in poverty and we were poor. I remember people bringing us a box of food and toys at Christmas. I started to realize that we were poor when it was time to buy school clothes and supplies. We were not able to go until the day before school started and only got a pair of shoes and basic school supplies. My mother worked three jobs to support us and it was never enough. We lived in a small trailer and were not allowed to have friends come over. I also remember the trailer being cold because the heat was cut off. Because of my situation as a child, I have learned that its no fun being hungry. Now that I am grown and have children of my own, I am learning still. There have been times that I have gone without food to make sure that my children eat and have enough I buy something for myself maybe once in a couple months because I want my children to have new clothes and school supplies. Children in Russia face the same issues as anywhere else. UNICEF states that

•  "Children growing up in deprived households do less well in terms of life chances, in educational attainment, wages, employment rates and other social outcomes in adulthood. Child poverty is also being shown to be crucially linked to the inter-generational transmission of poverty, and its perpetuation. Any long term efforts to tackle poverty and inequality need effective action to break child poverty"

There are around 90 million living in poverty. When you grow up in poverty, there is more of a chance that you will remain in poverty throughout your life. In Russia, a family living close to poverty may chose not to have any or more children because it can push them into poverty. Therefore, the population will slowly decrease.

Price of Food

I was actually unsure about what to post for this post. But, after reading Nadia's post it came to me. I work for and Early Head Start program. Anyone who knows about this program is that we cater to low income families. The majority of these families are also on food stamps. My concern is the fact that so many children are becoming over weight. And I believe this is happening because junk food is so low in cost and so high in fat. I have attempted to go on diets in the past and have gone broke doing it. Why is it that all of the healthy food is so expensive? If junk food would be a higher price, families would be less likely to buy it. My other solution is that Food Stamps will not allow it just like they do not allow beer or toilet paper. I have had a family use their food stamps to buy $40.00 worth of candy for a pinata. And the parents response was " I am not paying for it, so What"s the big deal"

Childbirth In Your Life and Around the World

Having my first child was a day I will never forget. It was an easy pregnancy, but a horrible birth. Before I even got to the hospital, we were stuck in a traffic jam for over an hour. Upon arriving at the hospital, I was given a epidural.  The labor stopped. When I was dilated enough to push, I pushed nonstop for 4 hours. Almost needed a c-section. Lane had to be suctioned out. After he was born, I was one of the few who receive a rear but painful headache from the epidural. I was given a strong pain killer and woke up in ICU. I was told my blood pressure blew up then bottomed out. Because I was young, I was alloud to have many people in my ICU room.
My second child was the opposite. Pregnancy was horrible and the birth was two pushes and she was out with no trouble.
